In my work with organizations of all sizes and stages of their ITSM maturity, one trend I have witnessed over the past decade is that very few, if any, of them own their entire IT estate. Most organizations have services made up of components from a range of providers, including cloud providers, outsourcers, SaaS solutions or an internal team. This multi-provider landscape, whilst valuable for the business, can create challenges. Managing the end to end value chain, and delivering consistent service to the business is where service integration and management, or SIAM, delivers tangible results.
What is SIAM?
SIAM is a way of managing services that harmonizes and orchestrates multiple providers, ensuring that the business receives a consistent and high-quality level of service that meets their desired outcomes. As the name implies, the main role of SIAM is to integrate services so that they appear as one from the outside, even though he supply of those services may involve a number of different parties.
SIAM is an evolution of service management. The difference lies in the complexity of multi-sourcing. Where service management may be responsible for one team or supplier, SIAM must coordinate and integrate all these groups, reducing the impact of siloed structures. It’s like being the conductor of an orchestra. Each section must play their part, but to get a good piece of music, it is important to make sure that they are all playing the right notes at the right time. SIAM plays a key role in ensuring that collaboration and accountability are upheld in multi-provider environments.
Why is SIAM Important?
For both IT and business leaders, SIAM is more than just a buzzword; it is a capability that can deliver tangible benefits to organisations that get it right. These can include:
- Improved vendor performance: by defining clear accountabilities and mutual goals.
- Informed decision-making: through reliable information and transparency of reporting.
- Risk reduction: through visibility of overlaps and gaps in service provision.
- Increased business: value by ensuring IT services are well aligned and consistently support business objectives.
In short, for those using multiple providers to supply IT services, SIAM is no longer a nice-to-have, but a must-have if those services are to work effectively together to deliver growth, resilience and innovation.
